Pre-Order

With Pre-Order, you can purchase the latest items added to our store in advance of them arriving with us.

Your Pre-Order is prioritised (at no additional charge); meaning that as soon as the product arrives with us, we can wrap it straight back up; ready for collection via Click & Collect or despatch to you — it often never even hits the stock room shelves!

Pre-Launch

With Pre-Launch, the date when we expect to receive the product ourselves is still a little too hazy to be confident in accepting Pre-Orders.

So, instead, you can submit your email address against the item you are interested in and we will email you as soon as stock arrives on the system.

Estimated Delivery & Collection Dates

Estimated Delivery & Collection Dates are given on Pre-Order and Pre-Launch products. They are for indication purposes only and can change at any time without notice.

The dates we provide are based on indications given by our suppliers. Whenever we get updated information from our suppliers we will endeavour to update the Estimated Delivery & Collection Dates provided on product pages.

Hassle free returns

We know that you can't always get it right first time especially when buying footwear online so we have a relaxed return policy.

We need to be able to sell any items returned as new so please make sure that any items returned are unused and clean with all the original packaging intact.

Please send all returns to the shop address:

Backcountry UK
The Sorting House
Wharfebank Mills
Ilkley Road
Otley
LS21 3JP
UK

We offer a 21 day returns period but don't worry if you run over this a little, we just ask that any items coming back are sent back sooner rather than later as we need to get them listed for sale again.

We do not pay any return postage costs so you will need to cover the cost of returns, the post office is usually the best service for sending small to medium parcels back but there are many parcel brokers that will work too.

The Royal Mail Click & Drop service is a fast and good value way to return most items if you have access to a printer at home. This service is not operated by us.

Once we have the item back we will check it and exchange the size or process the refund as fast as we can.

If you think there is a manufacturing issue with a product bought from us then please email us with a description and photos of any issue and the proof of purchase. info@backcountryuk.com

For UK orders we will refund the original outward postage at our basic postage cost, or if we are exchanging the size we normally send out the replacement at no extra cost (highlands & Islands may be an exception to this)

We can't refund the outward shipping cost for international returns

Salomon's revolutionary ski touring and freeride binding design which has been a game changer for backcountry skiers wanting the best in Ski performance and safety.

The Shift MNC turns pin tech touring bindings on their head, when skiing the design is based around a good old tried and tested Alpine binding with an adjustable toe height (something like a warden 13) but the clever part is with the flick of a lever a pair of tech pins emerge at the toe these allow you to clip in at the toe like a conventional tech binding and give you the feel and range of motion plus the zero lift weight you get with a pin tech touring binding.

My favorite aspect of this design is that by using a tried and tested design, namely an alpine binding with an adjustable toe height (Warden 13 MNC for example), Salomon have achieved the same reliable release characteristics, across a wide range of boot designs, that we find on Alpine bindings and Frame Touring Bindings. They have also achieved many of the advantages associated with conventional pin tech bindings, a lower stand height, zero lift weight, a natural pivot and a lighter weight.

At 1.7 KG/pair the Shift isn't going to brake any records in the super light class, but for freeriders and people wanting Alpine Binding ski performance this will knock up to a KG off the weight of many heavy duty frame bindings and as pin fittings become the norm in Backcountry Ski boots this may spell the beginning of the end for many frame binding designs.

Those wanting to do bigger days of touring will notice the 1KG weight saving of bindings like the ATK R12 or the but these are closer in weight to bindings like the Kingpin 13 and offer lateral toe release.

The stand height (height of your boot above the ski deck when skiing) will depend on your boot because the toe height adjustment is achieved by moving the AFD up and down rather than the toe piece, Full touring boots will have a stand height of only 20mm whilst Alpine boot soles will be up to 28mm stand height. (fritschi frame bindings are closer to 39mm so this is still a reduction). The lower stand height will usually feel more stable for most people.

DIN range begins at 6 which can be quite high for some lighter skiers, if you need setting of betwen 4 and 6 then you will need the new Salomon Shift 10 MNC. Most hard chargers should still feel quite happy with the DIN 13 maximum.

The Shift is be fully compatible with all freeride boots with pin tech fittings and Alpine Touring boots with iso 9523 (Boots with a full heel and toe lug) but they won't be compatible with Touring boots with reduced size toe and heel lugs (Scarpa F1, Dynafit Hoji Pro Tour and TLT7) or softer plastic heel lugs. They will also be compatible with standard Alpine downhill boot soles but only to ski, not to tour (the requires Pin fittings).

We've skied the Shift and can confirm that they feel like a good Alpine binding on the descent, the touring functions work well, the single climbing position didn't feel like a problem and although they are not as free feeling when skinning as things like ATK bindings they are a massive improvement on fritschi freeride pro etc.
They are now into their 3rd season, they have been very popular and seem to be standing the test of time well.

An excellent choice as a do it all set up with a light all mountain ski.
